SUSAN HUGHES BANNING has been a partner in Hemenway & Barnes since 1988 and has served as a member of the firm's Management Committee. She concentrates her practice in the areas of civil litigation and employment law and has represented individuals and businesses before state and federal agencies and in state and federal courts, as well as in arbitrations and various forms of alternative dispute resolution. Ms. Banning advises employees and management on all aspects of employment law, including compliance with state and federal regulations, contracts, policies and procedures, and separation agreements. She has successfully litigated cases in the areas of employment discrimination, unfair competition, intellectual property disputes, tort claims and business contract matters.

Ms. Banning has been a speaker for various business and professional groups, including Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, Inc., and is a contributing author to Risk Management for Nonprofit Organizations (MCLE).

She graduated from Vassar College (cum laude with General and Departmental Honors) in 1974 and from Suffolk University Law School (cum laude) in 1979. Following her graduation from law school, Ms. Banning clerked for the Justices of the Massachusetts Superior Court and then served as assistant legal counsel to the Justices of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts prior to commencing practice at Hemenway & Barnes in 1981.
