NANCY E. DEMPZE joined Hemenway & Barnes in 2001 after working in the Trusts & Estates Department of Hill & Barlow for ten years. Ms. Dempze’s practice includes sophisticated estate planning, estate administration, trust administration, charitable planning, and planning for incapacitated and special needs clients. Ms. Dempze works with clients to develop and implement tax efficient wealth-transfer strategies for valuable land holdings, family businesses, concentrated stock positions, art and collectibles, and other assets in ways that are consistent with the client’s overall goals and values.
Ms. Dempze has been selected for inclusion in Best Lawyers in America and as a Massachusetts Super Lawyer. Ms. Dempze has given presentations on estate planning topics at the Federal Tax Institute, the Boston Bar Association, the Women’s Bar Association, the EPA, AnswerThink, Inc., Episcopal Divinity School and Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc. She also served as the writer, co-producer and speaker for a cable TV program on estate planning sponsored by the Women’s Bar Association and Media One.
Ms. Dempze serves on several charitable and bar association groups. She is an Overseer of the Museum of Science, Boston, and a member of its Planned Giving Committee and serves on the Noble and Greenough School Annual Fund Leadership Committee and The Rivers School Annual Fund Committee. Ms. Dempze is Co-Chair of the Boston Bar Association Trust and Estates Section and is a past Co-Chair of its Estate Planning and New Developments Committees. Ms. Dempze is also a member of the Steering Committee of the Boston Probate and Estate Planning Forum and a former Moderator and Program Chair.
Ms. Dempze is active in her community of Westwood. She is the President of the Westwood Land Trust and works with landowners and their advisors to develop conservation easement donations that promote conservation goals, provide tax benefits, and preserve the landowner’s rights consistent with conservation goals. Ms. Dempze served as a Director and Clerk of the Westwood Educational Foundation for several years.
Ms. Dempze graduated from University of Wisconsin (magna cum laude, Sigma Theta Tau for honors in the field of Nursing). Prior to law school she worked as an oncology nurse at Stanford University Medical Center and as a pharmaceutical sales representative and District Trainer for Bristol Myers, Inc. Ms. Dempze graduated from Boston University School of Law (cum laude) in 1991, where she was a member of the Boston University Law Review. Ms. Dempze has completed several courses in the Boston University School of Law Graduate Tax Program.
