CHARLES FAYERWEATHER is a partner of the law firm of
Hemenway & Barnes. He concentrates his legal practice in the
areas of taxation of individuals, estates and nonprofit organizations.
As a professional fiduciary, he acts as a trustee of individual and
family trusts and as executor of estates.
Mr. Fayerweather's work with individual clients particularly
emphasizes the use of sophisticated estate planning and charitable
giving techniques to allow high net worth individuals to transfer
wealth to successive generations in a tax efficient manner and to
allow non-traditional families and business owners to successfully
address their unique estate planning needs.
Mr. Fayerweather serves as a trustee of many individual and family
trusts. In that role he has responsibility for investment and
distribution decisions (often in conjunction with a family member
trustee) that will preserve and enhance family wealth over many
generations.
Mr. Fayerweather acts as outside counsel to many nonprofit organizations with respect to matters that arise during the life of an organization from formation and obtaining recognition of tax-exempt status through on-going regulatory and tax compliance, fund raising, employment and compensation issues, liability reduction and governance issues. His work particularly focuses on nonprofit tax compliance issues such as unrelated business income tax, self-dealing in private foundations, excess benefit transactions in public charities, and political activities.
Mr. Fayerweather is an author and lecturer for Massachusetts
Continuing Legal Education, Inc. and a member of the Probate Law
and Taxation sections of the American Bar Association, the
Massachusetts Bar Association, and the Boston Bar Association.
Mr. Fayerweather graduated from Princeton University in 1984 with
a degree in Architectural History and Design (cum laude) and from
Boston College Law School in 1991 (magna cum laude). At Boston
College Law School he was a contributing author to and Editor of
the Boston College Law Review and a member of the Order of the
Coif Honor Society.
Mr. Fayerweather serves on the Board of Directors of the North Bennet Street School, a nationally known school in the field of traditional handcrafts, including bookbinding, fine woodworking, jewelry making, and preservation carpentry.
Mr. Fayerweather is a Director and Officer of the Sharon Education Foundation, a charitable organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs in the Sharon, Massachusetts public schools.
