GEORGE T. SHAW
GEORGE T. SHAW graduated from Trinity College in 1962 (Phi Beta Kappa) and Harvard Law School in 1965. After serving in the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General Corps, he joined Hemenway & Barnes full time in 1968. Mr. Shaw concentrated his practice in the field of estate planning, trust and estate administration and probate matters for more than 25 years before retiring in 2000. During his time at Hemenway & Barnes, he was the partner with primary oversight responsibility for our Trust Department. Mr. Shaw serves as a co-trustee with Fiduciary Trust Company, and with several private trust offices.
He is a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and was active on several of its committees and task forces. He was active on the Probate Committee of the Boston Bar Association, and served on the faculty for numerous professional education programs presented by the Boston Bar Association, Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, Inc., the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and other professional groups. Mr. Shaw was a director of Associated Grantmakers of Massachusetts and participated in educational programs about private philanthropy sponsored by AGM.
Mr. Shaw has continued the focus of his outside activities in the environmental, educational and cultural fields. He was a director and/or trustee of the Massachusetts Audubon Society, the Conservation Law Foundation of New England, the Manchester (MA) Conservation Trust, Essex County Greenbelt Association and the Damariscotta River Association (Damariscotta, Maine). He served as legal editor of a book on conservation land preservation techniques published by Essex County Greenbelt Association and the Trustees of Reservations. In the area of education, Mr. Shaw served as a trustee of Pomfret School, and he and his wife were co-chairs of the Parents' Committee at St. Mark's School and members of its Board of Trustees. He is a director and former board chair of the Berkshire Choral Festival and was president and a trustee of Chorus North Shore and was a director of The Art Connection and Round Top Center for the Arts (Damariscotta, Maine). He was an active participant in town government in Manchester, having served on its Conservation Commission, Planning Board (chair for two years), Zoning Board of Appeals (chair for two years), Capital Plans Advisory Committee and several study committees, and is chair of the Finance Committee for the town of Newcastle, Maine. A seasonal resident of Cuttyhunk Island, Mr. Shaw was chair of the Zoning Study Committee of the Town of Gosnold. Mr. Shaw was a director and president of Parents and Children's Services and a member of the vestry of St. John's Church, (Beverly Farms, MA and St. Andrew’s Church, Newcastle, ME). He is a trustee of the Island Institute (Rockland, ME) and Genesis Community Loan Fund. (Damariscotta, ME), is on Maine board of the Conservation Law Foundation of New England and is treasurer of St. Andrew's Church, Newcastle, Maine.
